Letter from Paul Schlichter

Rafael—thanks for your response. Your father was such a great inspiration to those fortunate enough to have him as a teacher. Lakewood high school in 1963 was so many years ago but I was moved to contact you after reestablishing contact with another Lakewood student who remembered your father for the impact he had on her career.

After high school graduation and after experiencing your father’s life learning skills I was fortunate to be accepted at Dartmouth, Stanford, West Point and the US Air Force Academy. I chose the Air Force option, was a pilot for eight years and flew 360 combat missions in Southeast Asia. Following that, I earned an MBA at UC Berkeley and went into the business world. (Along the way and just after graduating from the Air Force Academy in 1967 I was one of twelve members of a Mt. Mckinley/Denali climbing expedition. I was fortunate to summit and survive the 35 day expedition. Sadly 7 of our 12 climbing companions were trapped in a vicious storm and did not survive. They remain on that mountain still today. Through all those experiences, I remember the power of your father’s teaching—not just the foreign language but the ways of the dangerous world in which we live.

Another Lakewood High School student inspired by your father was Sandy (Venable) Grimes. Sandy had the good fortune to learn Russian with your father’s guidance. She then majored in Russian studies at the University of Washington and from there joined the CIA where she progressed up the “corporate” ladder to positions of significant influence. You may have already heard this, but Sandy was the key CIA operative who investigated and uncovered Aldrich Ames the notorious mole who betrayed so many of our agents in Russia and Eastern Europe. Sandy’s diligence and persistence led to the arrest and conviction of Ames. That may never have happened without the impact your father had on Sandy’s career choice.

Your father was a unique, tough taskmaster and we are grateful for the time he spent with a few fortunate souls at Lakewood High School.

Libor Brom was professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures and director of Russian Area Studies at the University of Denver.
He is the author of nine books and a great deal of studies in the field of Slavic culture and civilization.
In addition, he has lectured at numerous institutions of learning and before many civic and religious groups on education, literature, and international relations. He has appeared on three continents and often on radio and television.
A native Czechoslovakian, Dr. Brom was an American citizen. He received his education at the Czechoslovak Institute of Technology, School of Economics, the Charles University of Prague, School of law, the San Francisco State University, and the University of Colorado.
In Europe, Dr. Brom served as an economist and lawyer in International Business and as the chief planner in the research. development, and normalization of Czechoslovak river shipbuilding.
As a professor in the United States, he was selected by the Modern Language Association of America as the Teacher with Superlative Performance, named The American by Choice in Colorado, and received a National Americanism Medal.
In the College Book by the Ballantine Books of New York, 1984 he is named Denver University's best professor.
Dr. Brom served in the leadership of many national and international organizations and was imprisoned by both the Nazis and the Communists. He is listed in Who'S Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
